AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What’s the Difference?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is about ranking in traditional Google/Bing search results, AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is about getting your content chosen as a direct answer by tools like Google AI Overviews, and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is about being cited or mentioned by AI chat tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. They overlap heavily and reinforce each other, but each targets a slightly different surface.

SEO: Ranking in Search Results

Traditional SEO focuses on ranking your pages in the classic list of blue links on Google or Bing — driven by technical health (crawlability, site speed, mobile-friendliness), on-page optimization (titles, headings, content relevance), and off-site authority (backlinks, reputation).

AEO: Being the Direct Answer

Answer Engine Optimization focuses on structuring content so search engines can pull a direct, extractable answer — the kind that shows up in Google’s AI Overviews, featured snippets, or voice assistant responses. This means answering questions directly and concisely near the top of a page, using clear headings, and structuring content in a way that’s easy for an algorithm to extract cleanly.

GEO: Being Cited by AI Chat Tools

Generative Engine Optimization focuses on how AI chat tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot decide which sources to cite or mention when answering a user’s question. These tools favor content that is clearly authoritative, well-structured, factually accurate, and easy for their crawlers to access and understand — a lot of the same fundamentals as good SEO and AEO, applied to a different kind of engine.

Why They're Not Really Separate Strategies

In practice, the same foundational work supports all three: a technically healthy, crawlable site; clear, accurate, well-organized content; genuine expertise and trust signals; and real authority built through legitimate mentions and links. Rather than treating SEO, AEO, and GEO as three separate projects, the most effective approach is one strong content and technical foundation that naturally serves all three.

Important: no legitimate provider can guarantee AI citations or rankings — visibility depends on relevance, authority, competition, and how each platform’s algorithm behaves, which changes over time.
